Fire extinguishers in good hands, Allstate grant funds simulators
09/13/2008
Antonia, MO -
During a training session, Sharon Avery (left) uses a fire extinguisher simulator with the help of Antonia Deputy Chief Larry Steinkamp as Deputy Chief Glenn Nivens controls the digital flame.

The Antonia Fire Protection District received a grant from the Allstate Foundation to support safe community initiatives throughout Jefferson County.

Funding provided by the $8,000 grant will be used to purchase state-of-the-art Bullseye fire extinguisher simulators that will be used during corporate training sessions and in the Safety House program.

Antonia Deputy Chief Glenn Nivens said the Bullseye extinguishers use laser and water technology to instruct people on the proper ways to put out fires as a digital trainer controls a practice flame. Laser extinguishers cost about $800, and the water extinguishers cost around $300. The entire set up costs nearly $10,000."The Allstate Foundation is proud to award the Antonia Fire Department with this grant that will help educate children and adults on fire safety," said Eric Kundert, an Allstate Exclusive Agent in Imperial. "These simulators used to enhance the Safety House program will be a great hands-on educational opportunity for all families in our community, and with proper training the correct use of fire extinguishers not only creates safer work environments, but also creates an opportunity to have a safer home."

Last year, the Allstate Foundation awarded a $6,000 grant to the district in support of the Safety House program.

The Allstate Foundation is an independent corporation funded by contributions from Allstate Insurance and offers grants to nonprofit organizations that seek to improve the quality of life in communities across the country.
